Husband Gets a Mexican Fire Lighting Lesson

Husband goes to local Super to get lighter fluid for our charcoal grill. He keeps trying to explain in Spanish to woman in the store what he wants. She has that look that shows I do not understand you.

Finally, she grabs Husband by the hand and guides him behind the store where her husband is lighting a fire. He is soaking a paper towel in corn oil and putting under the charcoal to light his grill. (It is not clear if he is in shorts or underwear) He explains to Husband how to do it. Gracias Amigo!

So we no longer have to get lighter fluid - see the fire!

I have realized in last few months that we are obsessed in USA with having a "separate specialized something" for every need. This is a logical consequence in an increasingly consumerist society. So mark lighter fluid off our grocery list - one less item taking up space, packaging and resources.

In my home town of Powers, no one used barbecue lighter fluid. But many of the options would hardly be on the OSHA-endorsed list. But I heartily agree that we Americans believe that you have to gave a special product for every occasion.

Heeeheee,it's like when I read some frugal blogs and the hot new tips are stuff I always did. Actually a really neat thing to have and make is a charcoal chimney here are some instructions that I found with pictures! http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Charcoal-Chimney/
I must confess however that I like the clicker type long nozzle lighters better than the tiny wax matches they sell here.

Theresa

Theresa - Yes those matches are a crack up. Husband bought those when we first arrived and we were like - what is this?

I will pass along your tip to Husband.

Cool - we'll try it. I hate the smell from lighter fluid (which we have no troble finding here, it comes in tube, a gel called, appropriately, FUEGO).

I love seeing all the non-special products used - especially in things like road construction! Got a guy working in a manhole? No saw horse necessary, just surround the hole with some rocks from the side of the road!

Love the comment about specialized products for every little task. So true! Paper towel for a coffee filter- gasp!

Theresa,
Most people I know use "ocote" to start their charcoal fire. Ocote is a kind of "pitch pine". Most of the time you will find several sticks in the bag of charcoal that you buy but it is hard to recognize because it is dirty from the charcoal. You can also buy it in little plastic bags at the sooper. You don't need much. A few little sticks will do. I just bought three big bundles at a little rural store for 10 pesos each. That is enough ocote to last me several years. By the way, I have a grill just like yours. I hope that yours does a better job that mine does :)

I have always noticed the same thing - i.e. we always have to have specialized somethings that are often not necessary. Good to see others notice.
